You have to give me just a second before I review House at the End of the Street. Have you seen it? It’s this movie where this girl and her mother move in next door to this house where this double murder took place years ago. Apparently the sister killed the parents and ran off into the woods and supposedly drowned and now her brother is back and living in the house. Of course, living in a house where a double homicide occurred can kind of bring down the property values of the other houses in the neighborhood; that’s why Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence, Winter’s Bone) and her mom, Sarah (Elisabeth Shue, C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation) are able to afford their new place; which also makes me wonder as to the affordability of housing in Tokyo since Godzilla stomps that city flat on a regular basis. Anyway, let me finish these letters and I’ll get back to you.
Dear Jennifer Lawrence,
I loved you in X-men: First Class and I am sure you were wonderful in Silver Linings Playbook. Shoot, you won an Oscar for that one. You’re pretty, you seem down to earth and you are a talented young woman. However, if you do another movie like House at the End of the Street people are going to quickly lose interest. I mean, seriously, did you even have a clue as to the plot of this movie? Hell, I don’t think the writers or the director knew what was going on in this movie from one day to the next; the sister is alive; nope, she’s dead; nope, alive again. Seriously Jen, have you ever seen such confusion?

My wife and I watch you every Monday alongside Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore on Bates Motel. Love the show, by the way. You know something, Max? Maybe you should leave the crazy parts for Freddie to do. They just don’t seem to suit you. Then again, maybe they do and you had no idea what the hell you were supposed to be doing in House at the End of the Street, either.

Dear Elisabeth Shue,
I watched you grow up in the movies from Karate Kid to Cocktail to Leaving Las Vegas and beyond. Now you’re playing a blood spatter analyst on C.S.I. and I think that’s great. I’m a big fan and I get to see you every week. When I say fan, I mean that in a non-stalker sense of the word. But now here you are playing a mom and I just don’t know if I’m ready for that. It just doesn’t seem right in the balance of the universe. By the way, did you have any idea as to the plot of House at the End of the Street? I don’t think that Jennifer (Lawrence) or Max (Thieriot) had a clue. What’s worse is I don’t think the writers or director had a clue, either.
There, all finished. Now, where were we? Oh yeah, my review of House at the End of the Street. It sucked. End of story.

The project was originally announced in 2003 with Jonathan Mostow directing andRichard Kelly scripting.
The film was shot in the 2-perf Techniscope format to provide a grainy image reminiscent of older horror films and to save money on film stock and processing. Despite this, “Filmed in Panavision” is listed in the end credits.

Did you ever know someone who was crazy? It’s not so much the lyrics of Psycho Killer that warn us that we are inside the brain of a madman; it is David Byrne singing the song as if his shock treatment session went on a little too long. Byrne said he wrote the song (with help) by ‘imagining Alice Cooper singing a Randy Newman ballad.’

Is the entirety of Riders on the Storm about a psycho? Probably not; but that part about a ‘killer on the road’ whose ‘brain is squirming like a toad’ puts the storm just outside of crazy town.

One of the perks of picking out songs for these little lists of mine is finding something that I’ve never heard before; for instance this gem by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue from Cave’s Murder Ballads. Boy meets girl, boy loves girls, boy kills girl to preserve her beauty. Nope, nothing crazy here.

Every Breath You Take is the un-official theme song for Stalking Awareness Month. If you thinks it’s a sweet little love song then you’re the one who’s crazy. Even Sting said he didn’t realize how sinister it was and that people have misinterpreted it.

He loved her, he killed her, he buried her six feet underground and still hears her complain. I think the serial killer Edmund Kemper may have been a ghost writer on this tune. After murdering his mother and attempting (unsuccessfully) to stuff her larynx down the garbage disposal, Kemper said that even in death the woman wouldn’t stop bitching at him.

It’s my wife I have to thank for reminding me of this Zevon song about a young man who finds creative things to do with little Susie, her bones, his Sunday best suit and an infamous pot roast. The fact that I’m a major Warren Zevon fan makes me ashamed that I forgot it.

I remember buying Rush’s Moving Pictures album for their hit Tom Sawyer. I remember falling in love with the album because of this song, Witch Hunt. It seems to me that the song is more relevant in 2013 than it ever was in 1981. Interesting bit of trivia: the band was laying down the tracks for the song when they heard the news that John Lennon had been murdered.

I seem to recall a while back that I said that I wasn’t going to review any more non-horror motion pictures on this blog. Yet, here I am with cast photos, a poster and a trailer from Quentin Tarantino’s debut film, Reservoir Dogs. How do I explain myself? How about with “Honey, I had no idea she was your sister?*” or “Yes, this is exactly what it looks like.”
Why am I reviewing Reservoir Dogs? To be honest I didn’t like the film all that much when it was first released in 1992. But like Mickey says in Natural Born Killers when asked if he liked Key Lime Pie; “No, but I was a completely different person back then.” It took the knock-out punch of Pulp Fiction before I was able to appreciate that Tarantino already had us on the ropes with Reservoir Dogs.
The plot is as simplistic as you’re going to get with a heist film; six strangers, their Christian names unbeknownst to one another, pull off a diamond heist that goes south. Two are killed, one is shot and the rest of them smell a rat. We never see the heist and that’s the beauty of the whole thing. Tarantino is more interested in showing us the ‘before’ and the ‘after’ rather than the ‘during’. The beginning of the film opens in a restaurant with our six bandits; along with Nice Guy Eddie (Chris Penn, True Romance, and Rush Hour) and boss Joe Cabot (Lawrence Tierney, Pulp Fiction, Dillinger) in a moment of male bonding before ‘going to work’. There’s joking, bullshitting, male chauvinism and enough testosterone going around the table to make a stud bull jealous. It’s everything and nothing we’ve ever seen before. It makes you kind of sad that it’s all going to go to hell and fast.
Reservoir Dogs is a film that we appreciate for the smaller parts and come to love when we put them all together. Mr. Brown’s pornographic explanation of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” (It’s all about a girl who digs a guy with a big dick. The whole song is a metaphor for big dicks.”); Mr. Pink’s near-convincing reasons for not tipping (“I don’t tip because society says I have to.”) The doling out of the color-coded names (“Why am I Mr. Pink?”); the ‘ear’ scene in which Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen ( Kill Bill Vols. 1 and 2, Sin City) gets creative with a straight razor upon the pallet which is Marvin the cops’ (Kirk Baltz) hapless face. (…”I’m gonna torture you anyway…all you can do is pray for a quick death, which you ain’t gonna get.”) I believe this scene may be tribute to both the shower scene in Hitchcock’s Psycho in that we think we see blood when we really don’t; and to Scorcese’s Taxi Driver in that like the scene where Travis Bickle is pleading with Betsy on the phone the camera pans away as it too painful to watch; the camera pans as Mr. Blonde begins to cut and all we have are Marvin’s muffled screams and our own imaginations.
So, that’s why I’m reviewing Reservoir Dogs; to show appreciation for a film that I should have appreciated from the beginning. That sounds weak; but it’s all I’ve got.
*My lame at attempt at being witty. Do not take it literally.
TRIVIA
Quentin Tarantino wanted James Woods to play a role in the film, and made him five different cash offers. Woods’ agent refused the offers without ever mentioning it to Woods as the sums offered were well below what Woods would usually receive. When Tarantino and Woods later met for the first time, Woods learned of the offer and was annoyed enough to get a new agent. Tarantino avoided telling Woods which role he was offered “because the actor who played the role was magnificent anyway”. It is widely accepted that the role that Tarantino was referring to was Mr. Orange.
David Duchovny auditioned for a part.
According to an interview on the DVD, Michael Madsen says that Kirk Baltz asked to ride in his trunk to experience what it was really like. Madsen agreed, but decided as he went along that this was time for his own character development. So he drove down a long alley with potholes, and then a Taco Bell drive-through before taking Baltz back to the parking lot and letting him out. The soda he ordered at said drive-through is the same one he can be seen drinking during his character’s first appearance in the warehouse.
Mr. Pink’s numerous references to being “professional” are a reference to movie director Howard Hawks, a favorite of Quentin Tarantino’s.
Edward Bunker, a former career criminal, was the youngest felon to be sent to San Quentin. (He was 17.) He was a novelist and also played cons in other films - Runaway Train, The Longest Yard and Straight Time (which was based on his novel) and worked as a technical advisor on others - Heat, for instance. Jon Voight’s character in ‘Heat’ was based on Bunker.

Let’s make no mistake about it: the original 1981 The Evil Dead is still the champ. That being said, does this mean that Evil Dead is a horrible remake that should have never been given the green light? Absolutely not; Evil Dead is a ferocious, gory and jump-inducing film that, after a rather boring first quarter of the first act, more than holds its own against its predecessor. It’s one of those horror movies that I’ve bragged about in past reviews; the kind that restores my faith in the horror genre. Trust me, after the last atrocity I reviewed I needed that faith restored in a bad way.
For the most part, Evil Dead is a carbon copy of the original. Five friends arrive at a cabin in the woods (hey, wouldn’t that make a great title for a horror movie?) for a little rest and relaxation. David (Shiloh Fernandez, Red Riding Hood, Deadgirl), Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci, Carriers, Horsemen), Mia (Jane Levy, Suburgatory), Olivia (Jessica Lucas, Cloverfield) and Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore, Burning Man) are your typical twenty-something group; handsome, pretty and smart and with their own set of demons in the form of Mia’s addictions. Before Evil Dead can turn into a very special episode of Intervention the smell of burning hair, dead cats in the attic and the discovery of a certain book best left unread make life a literal living hell for our crazy kids. Blood, gore, shotguns, nail guns, carving knives, and shards of glass, premature burial and bodily dismemberment are all a part of the fun. I said Evil Dead is for the most part a carbon copy of the original. Just as Bruce Campbell carved a name for himself in the annals of bad-assery (it’s a word, honest), a character in Evil Dead makes their bid for entry in the Demon Killing Hall of Fame. I’m not going to say who; I will just say that I was pleasantly surprised.
Evil Dead may go down in cinematic history as one of the most respectful remakes of a classic horror film. In fact, if The Evil Dead had never been made then Evil Dead might very well have been that classic horror film one day. Or, maybe not; what matters is that the filmmakers behind Evil Dead can be proud of their baby.
TRIVIA
If you take the first letters of the main characters David, Eric, Mia, Olivia and Natalie, the letters spell out DEMON.
In one scene there are cards spread out on the table. The cards are laid out in the order that Cheryl reads them in the original.
In the scene where the broken necklace is found outside of the cabin, it can be seen resting in the shape of a skull, just like in the original.
The illustration of the Abomination in the Naturom Demonto is based on the poster artwork for the original Evil Dead film.

The Plot (Taken from IMDb.com): Inspired by the fictional Dr. Heiter, disturbed loner Martin dreams of creating a 12-person centipede and sets out to realize his sick fantasy.
The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) is a vile, depraved and disgusting film that deserves no recognition and no place in cinema. Writer/director Tom Six can kiss my ass. On second thought, no he cannot kiss my ass; I don’t want to give him any ideas for future movies. I refuse to waste any more words on this garbage.
TRIVIA
On June 6, 2011, the BBFC (UK certification board) refused to grant this film a certificate, effectively banning the movie from being shown in cinemas or DVD in the UK. However, on October 6, 2011, the BBFC granted the film an 18 certificate after 32 cuts totaling 2 minutes and 37 seconds were made.
When Laurence R. Harvey auditioned, Tom Six asked him to “rape” a chair, which he did.
Miss Yennie tells Martin she can’t believe she’s auditioning for a Quentin Tarantino movie. Tarantino shot portions of Kill Bill: Vol. 1 in black and white to appease gore-sensitive censors; it’s rumored that Tom Six filmed The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) in black and white for the same reason.
